President Obama’s budget proposal makes a significant reinvestment in the Pell Grant program by cutting excessive lender subsidies from the student loan programs and redirecting that money to student aid. This report calculates the benefit if the full $5 billion went to students in each state. The average Pell Grant award in Wisconsin would rise by approximately $116 next year. Approximately 3,425 additional new students in Wisconsin would receive their first Pell Grant and be able to attend college.

Today the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives passed the College Cost Reduction and Access Act by votes of 79 to 12 and 292 to 97 respectively. The bill now goes to the president who has said he will sign the legislation into law.
