Connecting Wisconsin With High-Speed Rail

We had a big victory in January when President Obama announced that Wisconsin would connect Madison and Milwaukee with high-speed rail. That’s great news, but it’s just a start. WISPIRG is working to connect the rest of Wisconsin up through the Twin Cities, making it easier to travel throughout the Midwest.  And it’s the perfect time to do it because it will create jobs and reduce dependence on oil. Transportation For The 21st Century

WISPIRG is working to make sure that the federal transportation bill, which Congress takes up this year, doubles support for public transportation—such as light rail, commuter rail and modern bus systems—and helps to lay the groundwork for high-speed rail in Wisconsin and across the country. More And Better Transit

Public transportation, such as light rail and rapid bus systems, is the wave of the future. With volatile gas prices, our dependence on oil, and increasing global warming pollution, we need a transportation system that meets the challenges of the 21st century.  Plus, building a world class transit system will grow our economy and create jobs in the short term—setting Wisconsin up to succeed in the future. One critical step necessary in the short term for Wisconsin to reap these economic benefits and to meet the challenges of the 21st century is the creation of regional transit authorities.  Read more.

Overview

Most of us live miles from our daily trips for work, school, or other responsibilities. Unfortunately, our current transportation system has many of us stuck endlessly waiting in traffic, all the while spewing air pollution and consuming billions of barrels of overseas oil. There has got to be a better way.

Transportation networks need to be built and operated in the public interest. That means helping Wisconsinites get around by reducing traffic congestion and increasing alternatives to car travel.

Without big changes, Wisconsin’s transportation system is in trouble.  High and wildly fluctuating gas prices add to Wisconsin residents’ economic woes, traffic congestion wastes valuable time and energy, and our cars and trucks produce pollution that harms Wisconsin residents’ health and contributes to global warming.
