BPA Free Kids Act

What's New

On March 3, 2010, Governor Doyle signed the BPA Free Kids Act into law, making Wisconsin the third state in the nation to ban the toxic chemical, bisphenol-A (BPA), from children’s products.  The BPA Free Kids Act bans the manufacture and sale of BPA in children’s products such as bottles and sippy cups.

WISPIRG worked with state Sen. Julie Lassa and state Rep. Kelda Helen Roys to ban the toxic chemical and protect kids and public health in Wisconsin.

How You Can Help

Ask your legislator to cosponsor the BPA Free Kids Act

We have an opportunity to protect Wisconsin children from toxic products such as baby bottles and sippy cups. A bill introduced on June 10, 2009 would ban the sale and manufacture of BPA in children's bottles and sippy cups. Take Action.

Overview

We shouldn’t have to worry about exposing our kids to toxic chemicals when purchasing toys and other children’s products. And drinking a bottle of milk shouldn’t increase the risk that our children get prostate or breast cancer, heart disease or diabetes.

Unfortunately, many baby bottles sold in Wisconsin contain a synthetic sex hormone known as Bisphenol A, or BPA. Numerous scientific studies have shown that exposure to even tiny doses of BPA may lead to serious adverse health effects including breast and prostate cancer, heart disease, thyroid disease, early puberty in girls, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders, diabetes, and obesity.

A Milwaukee Journal Sentinel investigation exposed the efforts of the chemical and plastics industry to downplay the dangers of bisphenol-A and derail government action on the toxic chemical, even though it’s been shown to leach from children’s products, and numerous studies link it to harmful health effect.

Toxic chemicals have no place being in children’s products. That’s why we’re standing up for the public against the powerful special interests to make sure our children are protected from toxic chemicals.
