Will Congress Take Steps to Reduce Our Dependence on Oil?
President Obama has declared that our nation’s economic
recovery plan must do more than just pump money into the economy. He said it
must also create the infrastructure that America needs for the 21st
century, and that we must use smart spending to reduce America’s
dependence on oil and at the same time diminish emissions of global warming
pollution.
In other words, it is not enough for Congress to simply spend
money. If investments are made properly,
transportation infrastructure will not only put more Americans back to work and
energize the economy, it will also modernize it for the 21st
century.
Providing more funding for public transportation would help us to achieve these goals.
But, the Economic Recovery Package before Congress only allocates 25%
of the transportation funding to transit projects, while 75% goes into
building roads.
Congress is hearing from the road builders and other powerful
interests. Tell our congressional delegation that Wisconsinites want more funding to
go to public transportation instead.
Petition Text
Dear Member of Congress,
Wisconsin and the rest of the country needs far more public transportation to reduce our oil-dependence, global warming pollution, and traffic congestion.
Additionally, public transit projects create 20 percent more jobs-per-dollar than road building projects.
Unfortunately, the current Economic Recovery proposal would give 75% of transportation funding to highways.
Please lead the effort to increase the Economic Recovery Package's public transit funding.
